Elias Jay Colville was born on June 30, 1903, in Greenville, Ohio. He would enroll at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1921. He played guard in football, was a welterweight boxing champion, was a member of the “German Club and Play” and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Because of his boxing experience, he would begin coaching boxing in 1924. The coaches thought this made him qualified to be an athletic trainer and he became Miami’s first athletic trainer as a student that year.
The following year, Colville would be on staff full time as an athletic trainer and teacher of physical education, but he was still working with the high school teams and coaching wrestling and boxing, which were club sports. In 1956, he was selected to be an athletic trainer at the Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.
