Fitz Lutz

 

Thomas Fitzgerald "Fitz" Lutz was born in Cairo, Illinois, on April 13, 1908. He learned atheltic training under the tutelage of another ex-Cairo resident, Mike Chambers, while at LSU.

 

In 1938, Lutz left LSU to become the head atheltic trainer at the University of Georgia. He will remain at Georgia until 1947, excepting for for 1942-44, when he served as a civilian working at the Georgia Naval Pre-Flight School.

 

In 1947, Lutz will begin working for the Baltimore colts of the All American Football Conference. After that league folded at the end of 1949, he would find work as the head atheltic trainer at the University of North Carolina.

 

During 1953-54, Lutz will serve as the NATA District Three Director and as Chair of the NATA Board of Directors. Tragically, he will die of a haert attack, at age 46, on October 4, 1954. Lutz was honored by being inducted to the NATA Hall of Fame as a member of the original class in 1962.
